Mixing Antibiotics with Alcohol: Is it Safe?


Mixing alcohol and medication can lead to serious side effects. Doctors suggest avoiding alcohol when taking several drugs.

Can I drink alcohol with antibiotics?

Although antibiotics aren’t less effective than alcohol, drinking too much of it can increase your chances of having side effects.

  • Cefoperazone
  • Cefotetan
  • Doxycycline
  • Erythromycin
  • Metronidazole
  • Tinidazole
  • Ketoconazole
  • Isoniazid

Combining alcohol and antibiotics can lead to potentially fatal reactions.

You may be told by your doctor that occasional drinking is okay. It all depends on your age, general health, and what drug you are taking.
